CHAPTER FOURTEEN

We went racing toward the others. They weren’t where we had camped for the night, and as we squeezed between a pair of buildings, I could see Veela already trying to push off while Davond and Asherah were trying to hold her back. Teller held his whipstone-tipped pole in hand and had a bit of an amused smirk on his face, as if he knew that Veela was overreacting, but he wasn’t going to be the one to counter her. I shouted at them when Davond looked back.

Veela glowered at me. “I was going to leave the two of you.”

“I know. And maybe you should have. We think the Sundered are here.”

Her eyes widened.

She looked around, but it was Asherah who crouched down, dropping so that she could look underneath the buildings that we would push the raft under.

She frowned, but when she stood, she had a look of concern on her face. “I can see something, and… I hadn’t even realized it, but I can feel something. How did you know?”

“I should have been listening to Grellum all along,” I said. “He said that he saw something early on, but we weren’t sure what it was. I thought that it might have been from the ruins here.”

“Wait, what?” Davond asked.

“Yeah,” I said, waiting until they pushed the raft closer to us and then dropping down. I motioned for Grellum to join us, and he dropped down alongside me. “I think there is a ruin here. Or was.”

“It would make sense,” Davond said. “And maybe there’s something like that in Bastrop.”

“None of that matters,” Veela said. She looked up at me. “Did you see where they were?”

I shook my head. “I didn’t see anything, and to be honest, I’m not even convinced that they are here. It’s just that we can feel something.”

“We should get going,” Asherah said. “I don’t know what they are doing, but I can feel something too, and I don’t like it.”

I didn’t feel anything different, but then again, I had been near that crater in the town, creating the space where I suspected there had once been some ancient ruin. I didn’t know what purpose they would’ve had in attacking it or what they had thought to destroy, but I was left with concerns and questions about the kinds of things they were after.

If it was destruction, then what did they hope to accomplish? And maybe there was another reason, some other purpose, that I didn’t know about.

“Grab a pole,” Veela said, motioning to me, “and we will get moving.”

I grabbed one of the whipstone poles and crouched down to help the others as we navigated out from underneath the buildings and into the swamp.

As soon as we did, I noticed that there was a layer of haze that hung over everything, but it seemed to be thicker than it had been before. There was something about that haze, and that energy, that struck me as significant. Maybe it was the Sundered power, or maybe there was some other aspect to it that I didn’t fully understand.
